Reflective Journal One
- What have you learned and/or re-learned in the last 4 weeks of our sessions? (Specifically identify the concepts, principles, and skills in public speaking that you have learned and/or re-learned). (15 Points)
During the last four weeks of our sessions I have learned many valuable things. One of the most important is citing sources. There are many ways to cite a source that I hadn’t previously considered. The entire success of your speech depends upon citing sources properly. Another important thing that I have relearned is the idea of a speech. A speech needs to be well prepared. The ideas conveyed need to make sense and flow naturally. If I as the speaker convey that I am unprepared or uneducated about my subject, then my audience will struggle to understand my concept. The last crucial thing that we have gone over is to be ethically responsible. I am not only responsible for citing sources, but for giving others the respect that I would want them to give me. I have a responsibility to complete my assignments on time and use the resources provided for me to learn. I need to stop focusing on receiving a grade and actually learn.
2. Have your learning techniques, time management, and learning attitude been effective in this course? If yes, why do you say so? If not, why do you think so? (5 points)
My learning techniques, time management, and overall learning attitude have changed slightly in this class. Unlike other courses, there isn’t a book to study for an exam. I need to learn by experience and by making mistakes. Due to the way our society is, it is often frowned upon to make mistakes. I think at times it is difficult to change that way of thinking. A well written speech is important in my overall success. An excellent speech takes time and thought. We haven’t really given any speeches yet, but the preparation will take time and may require changes to my time management. Finally, I think my overall learning attitude has to change. I need to stop focusing on getting a good grade and focus on improving my speaking skills.
3. Are your instructor’s teaching style and approach , as well design of learning lessons and learning activities effective and able to help you learn and/or relearn things in speech communication? WHY do you think or say so? (5 poins)
I appreciate my instructor’s teaching style and approach. The class isn’t focused on passing an exam or getting an overall grade. For once, the academic style is focused solely on helping better me as a person, a student, and someday a professional. The activities are helpful and they make the learning environment much lighter. I think it is important for a speech class to have a comfortable atmosphere in order for everyone to benefit.
